„I get sick every time you come around. Then I get sick when you leave. You’re like a disease to me.“
Sam Shepard
A play in English – not only for the Young
Eddie, movie stuntman and hedonist, has found his old flame May in a small-town dump of a motel. He wants to take her away but she’s finally decided to start a life of her own. Like helpless addicts they cannot stop the ruthless struggle against the power of their mutual love, both seducing and fighting each other. Accusations fly, sparked off by fits of jealousy. Then an old man appears on screen, warming up old tales and pouring oil into the fire. When May’s new date Martin comes to pick her up, he can’t make head nor tail of the incendiary relationship he’s stumbled into, as May and Eddie offer different layers of a past that might just hold a delicate secret.
„Fool for Love“ (1983) by playwright, actor and director Sam Shepard, is a murky love story burdened by the never-ending heredital cycle of abuse and denial. Eddie and May are caught in a dream-like mèlange of movie images, fantasies and absurd inventions of the mind, and their conflict becomes the ultimate struggle for a fragile truth.
